What is WebP ?
WebP is an image format which uses lossy compression to encode visual data. It was created by Google in 2010 and has a corresponding .webp file extension. WebP is based on a combination of technologies, including VP8 video format and Vorbis audio format, both open source formats owned by Google. The WebP format allows for images that are substantially smaller in size compared to those in formats such as PNG, JPEG, and GIF. This makes them especially useful for web pages with many images and those accessed via mobile phones or other bandwidth-constrained network connections.
